In 1971, I wrote in the introduction to the front page South Africa survey that apartheid was unsustainable and therefore made the system’s collapse inevitable.

When I showed the article to Gordon Newton, editor, he threw it back to me across his polished desk and said: “Madam, you have written with vitriol in your pen.” The article did appear in the end, but with the mediation of the deputy editor Fredy Fisher.
